<p> DIED. GEORGE ("Spanky") MCFARLAND, 64, child movie star; following
cardiac arrest; in Grapevine, Texas. With pudgy authority, McFarland
played the leader in Hal Roach's Our Gang shorts between 1931
and 1945. Imperious and often hapless, Spanky--along with
Alfalfa and Buck wheat--became beloved by subsequent generations
when the Our Gang series was rerun endlessly on television under
the name The Little Rascals. McFarland retired from the movies
at age 16 and spent the remainder of his life doing sales and
charity work, in the course of which he made an occasional public
appearance as Spanky.
