  15. <p>     DIED. GEORGE ("Spanky") MCFARLAND, 64, child movie star; following
  16. cardiac arrest; in Grapevine, Texas. With pudgy authority, McFarland
  17. played the leader in Hal Roach's Our Gang shorts between 1931
  18. and 1945. Imperious and often hapless, Spanky--along with
  19. Alfalfa and Buck wheat--became beloved by subsequent generations
  20. when the Our Gang series was rerun endlessly on television under
  21. the name The Little Rascals. McFarland retired from the movies
  22. at age 16 and spent the remainder of his life doing sales and
  23. charity work, in the course of which he made an occasional public
  24. appearance as Spanky.
